Matthew Wosnitzer, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a board-certified urologic surgeon and physician scientist specializing in male infertility, microsurgical vasectomy reversal, varicocele, erectile dysfunction, and low testosterone issues. Dr. Wosnitzer is Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at CMHR, within the Yale New Haven Health System multi-specialty Northeast Medical Group in Connecticut.
Education: Dr. Wosnitzer completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University (magna cum laude with Biology major and Philosophy concentration). He completed medical school at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, where he graduated with highest honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) in 2006. During medical school, Dr. Wosnitzer was selected for a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine studying HIV-associated Nephropathy (HIVAN). Dr. Wosnitzer completed urology residency in the Department of Urology at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Subsequently, Dr. Wosnitzer completed Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Fellowship in the Department of Urology, Weill Cornell Medical College/ New York Presbyterian Hospital. At Cornell, Dr. Wosnitzer focused on microsurgical approaches to male infertility including vasectomy reversal, vasoepididymostomy, and microdissection testicular sperm extraction and served as an Instructor in the Department of Urology, Weill Cornell Medical College.
Awards: Dr. Wosnitzer has been awarded the New York Academy of Medicine/Ferdinand C. Valentine Research Fellowship in Urology for 2013-2014 and the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR) Research Grant for 2013-2014. Dr. Wosnitzer was also selected by the NIH-Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child and Human Development (NICHD) as a Clinical Research/Reproductive Scientist Training (CREST) Scholar Awardee for 2013-2014.
Academic Initiatives: Dr. Wosnitzer, a leading male infertility surgeon and author, has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters in male infertility, andrology, and general urology. He has received recognition and awards for his work, and presents his research throughout the United States including at the annual meetings of the American Urological Association, American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the American Society of Andrology.
Dr. Wosnitzer is involved in the peer-review process as a reviewer for Andrology, British Journal of Urology International, the Scandinavian Journal of Urology, and other organizations. He is also a selected member of the ISSM (International Society for Sexual Medicine) Ethics Committee. Dr. Wosnitzer is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery on the clinical teaching faculty of the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine, Quinnipiac University, and regularly lectures medical students and physicians.
Dr. Wosnitzer’s research interests include diagnosis and treatment of male infertility, study of microsurgical techniques for vasectomy reversal and sperm retrieval, and antibiotic usage patterns for inflatable penile prosthesis insertion. Dr. Wosnitzer is involved in clinical trials including the role of clomiphene citrate for the treatment of opioid-induced low testosterone in patients with chronic pain. Dr. Wosnitzer also has conducted clinical and basic science research to study intravesical treatment of BCG-refractory non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (docetaxel/nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel), and systemic platinum-based chemotherapy for advanced bladder cancer.
Dr. Wosnitzer is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and maintains active membership in the American Urological Association, American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), ASRM Physician Scientist Group, Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), Connecticut State Medical Society and Fairfield County Medical Association.
Dr. Wosnitzer is also a member of the Medical Review Board for Verywell Health, a leading online consumer health resource reaching more than 300 million readers a year. Further he is also a member of the Expert Review Boards of Health.com and Parents Magazine.
